A Guide to Fuel Additives.
Despite the fact that the technology behind the manufacture of cars remains the same, the durability of cars has gone up in the recent past. Factory recommended maintenance and car maintenance products are the main contributors to the increased lifespan of cars in the recent past. The factory recommended maintenance are the services recommended by the manufacturer for the car after covering a specified distance. The services are usually done so that to restore the condition of the car. The factory also recommends the use of certain car products such as fuel additives, octane boosters, and car wax. The article highlights some of the roles played by fuel additives in car maintenance.
A fuel additive is a liquid product added to the standard fuel to improve its performance. One of the benefits of fuel additive is that it increases fuel efficiency to eliminate problems such as rough idling, weak acceleration, and cold-start problems. The additives are also useful in reducing deposition in the combustion chamber and the valves. The fuel additives are group into various categories according to the role that they perform such as octane boosters, anti-gelling additives, fuel line antifreeze, fuel injector cleaners, and gasoline stabilizers.
Fuel line antifreeze additives are useful for the prevention of water condensation in the storage tanks. The effect of the condensed water is freezing in the fuel line at cold temperatures. Water dispersant is an example of fuel line antifreeze additive that absorbs the water and takes it to the exhaust stream for removal through evaporation. Mixing the condensed water with alcohol also prevents it from freezing when the temperatures are low.
Octane boosters are additive that improves the octane ring in gasoline to facilitate lubrication of valves in high compression engines. An octane booster contains valve seat lubricant which helps in reducing wear of iron valve seats. Diesel exhaust liquid is used to break down the nitrogen compounds in the engine into water and nitrogen. Another group of additives is anti-gelling additives which help in liquefying of solidified gel and paraffin wax. The presence of solidified gel and paraffin wax leads to weak cold starting performance.
Automotive is always affected by fuel volatility. Gasoline stabilizers are responsible for maintaining the fuel volatility. Gasoline stabilizers also reduces the starting difficulty resulting from tendency of the more gaseous components to vaporize into the atmosphere. The function of corrosion inhibitors is preventing corrosion in ethanol based fuel engines. Fuel injector cleaners helps in the removal of carbon deposits from valves and pistons.
